{"id":11017,"date":"2024-08-23T11:40:46","date_gmt":"2024-08-23T08:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lhei.lv\/workshop-on-marine-protected-areas-and-coastal-fisheries-management\/"},"modified":"2024-09-10T12:07:25","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T09:07:25","slug":"workshop-on-marine-protected-areas-and-coastal-fisheries-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lhei.lv\/en\/workshop-on-marine-protected-areas-and-coastal-fisheries-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop on Marine Protected Areas and coastal fisheries management"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"Post-text-hide wp-block-paragraph\">On August 20 BIOR, LHEI and Nature Conservation Agency organized a seminar to discuss new MPAs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignfull back-content has-ast-global-color-5-color has-text-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"background-color:#233173\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"inherit-container-width wp-block-group back_btn_button is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<button type=\"button\" onclick=\"history.back();\"> &lt;  Back <\/button>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns Post-content-news is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column p-con-left is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Workshop on Marine Protected Areas and coastal fisheries management<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bior.lv\/lv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Institute of Food safety, Animal Health and Environment &#8220;BIOR&#8221;<\/strong><\/a>, LHEI and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daba.gov.lv\/lv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Nature Conservation Agency<\/strong><\/a> started to work on mapping and research of specially protected marine habitats in the Baltic Sea within the <a href=\"https:\/\/lhei.lv\/en\/research-of-marine-protected-habitats-and-determination-of-the-necessary-protection-status-in-latvian-exclusive-economic-zone-life-reef\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>LIFE REEF<\/strong><\/a> project. In order to prepare proposals for the creation and inclusion of new Protected Marine Areas in the <strong>Natura2000<\/strong> network, as well as to develop scientifically based coastal fishing management plan, with proposals for reducing bycatch of seabirds and mammals, closer cooperation with the industry is needed, so coastal fishermen were invited to a discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A seminar was held on <strong>August 20<\/strong>, and during discussions it was concluded that cooperation between scientists, project managers, decision-makers and the industry is important and necessary, starting from project planning to the development of policy documents. Scientists together with coastal fishermen should develop and prepare a project application on <strong>seabird and mammal bycatch<\/strong> to obtain representative data (Nature Conservation Agency offered funding for a collaborative project). Financial support mechanisms should be planned ahead if fishing areas are to be lost.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Providing reliable and accurate data on fishing grounds can be the basis for finding a compromise between fishing industry activities and environmental protection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top p-con-right is-layout-flow
