This free, family-friendly event will explore how glaciers shaped the region\u2019s landscapes and introduce visitors to the underwater reefs of the Baltic Sea.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Held under the theme \u201cFollowing the Glacier\u2019s Footsteps: From the Ice Age to the Present\u201d, GeoDay will bring together geologists and nature researchers for talks, demonstrations and hands-on activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LHEI researcher Ieva B\u0101rda will introduce the Baltic Sea\u2019s underwater reefs and the methods used to study them. Video footage will reveal features hidden beneath the sea\u2019s surface and offer an insight into researchers\u2019 work at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The venue provides a direct connection to the region\u2019s geological past. \u0160l\u012btere Lighthouse stands at the edge of the Sl\u012btere Blue Hills escarpment, once washed by the waters of the ancient Baltic Ice Lake. Visitors will be able to climb the lighthouse for a view of the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Baltic reefs to Icelandic glaciers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme will explore glacial processes through a range of activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Geologist Dr Sandijs Me\u0161\u0137is will explain how glaciers form, move and leave traces in the landscape.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LHEI researcher Ieva B\u0101rda will discuss the Baltic Sea\u2019s underwater reefs and their exploration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr Kristaps Lamsters will take visitors on a virtual reality expedition to Iceland\u2019s glaciers, with views of a glacier tunnel and its surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geologist Kristaps Rendinieks will introduce an educational glacier model developed through the Geosites project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Latvia\u2019s Nature Conservation Agency will host its mobile nature classroom, alongside dry ice demonstrations and creative workshops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a conversation moderated by comedian Kalvis Troska, Sandijs Me\u0161\u0137is and Kristaps Lamsters will share experiences and unexpected moments from glacier expeditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GeoDay is organised for the second year by Kurzeme Planning Region in cooperation with LHEI and Latvia\u2019s Nature Conservation Agency through the Geosites project. It aims to encourage interest in geology and help people explore the natural heritage of Kurzeme, Latvia\u2019s western region. The first event, held in 2025 in the N\u012bca area, attracted more than 130 visitors and focused on dune formation and P\u016bs\u0113nu Hill, Latvia\u2019s Geological Site of the Year 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Geosites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geosites (project No. LL-00244) is a cross-border project supporting the protection of geological features in Latvia and Lithuania. It is funded through the Interreg VI-A Latvia\u2013Lithuania Programme 2021\u20132027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LHEI leads the project in partnership with the \u017demaitija National Park Directorate in Lithuania and Kurzeme Planning Region in Latvia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partners are studying and mapping underwater geological features in the Baltic Sea and Lake Plateliai in Lithuania. They are also identifying and classifying geological sites on land in Kurzeme and \u017demaitija, western Lithuania. The findings will inform geological heritage conservation, site management and public education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kurzemesregions.lv\/projekti\/vides-aizsardziba\/geosites\/\">Learn more about the Geosites project<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting GeoDay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Date:<\/strong> 31 October 2026<br><strong>Venue:<\/strong> \u0160l\u012btere Lighthouse, Sl\u012btere National Park, western Latvia<br><strong>Admission:<\/strong> Free, including all activities<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warm tea and snacks will be available.
