European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) Data Ingestion III
Data from the marine environment has great value. Quick access to reliable and accurate marine data and information is critical in order to address threats to the marine environment, develop policies and legislation to protect our coastal ecosystems and vulnerable ocean areas with research-based evidence to understand the complexities, trends and predict future changes in the marine environment. Good quality data and easier access is a prerequisite for further sustainable economic development or the so-called “blue growth”, as well as the achievement of the ambitious goals of the EU Green Deal and the EU mission to restore our oceans and waters.
The scope of “EMODnet Data Ingestion” is to identify and address organizations operating, for example, in the public sector, in research or in the private business sector, which acquire and manage marine data sets in various oceanographic fields – bathymetry, geology, physics, chemistry, biology and /or human activities in the marine environment and whose datasets are not included in the existing EMODnet marine data management structures, inviting to share datasets and complement the overall oceanographic database. “EMODnet Data Ingestion” national coordinators are involved in structuring data and metadata in appropriate and agreed upon formats to facilitate the inclusion of these organizations’ marine data sets in the common EMODnet data portal, data services and products.
LHEI is the national contact point in this project, responsible for organizing marine datasets and metadata in an appropriate format, as well as ensuring quality control. In certain cases, LHEI engages specialists from the relevant oceanographic field for data quality assessment.
Information about the partner institutions involved in the project from other countries is available here.
