To assess the environmental status of the Baltic Sea, Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology measures various biological and physical parameters, as well as concentrations of pollutants. More detailed information in the “Assessment of the environmental status” section.

LIAE also participates in international research groups that foster cooperation with other countries in the Baltic Sea region and the European Union. This provides an opportunity to coordinate work on improving the marine environmental status.
