LVAF project
Development of guidelines for monitoring drinking water microplastic contamination in Latvia in accordance with EU recommendations (DzerMikro)
In 2024, the European Commission published guidelines for the determination of microplastic contamination in drinking water. However, they are not directly applicable to conditions in Latvia. As part of the project, guidelines will be adapted to requirements in Latvia and pollution will be determined at different phases – at drinking water extraction points, in the distribution network and in the water available to consumers. The results will form basis for developing a monitoring protocol and will provide information on pollution trends for future assessments.
LHEI tasks in the project:
- to collect and evaluate information on research methods for drinking water microplastics in other countries;
- to visit laboratories in other countries for acquisition of methods to detect microplastics in drinking water;
- to organize a seminar for selecting sampling sites at different levels of drinking water preparation system;
- to collect and process microplastic samples in drinking water assess the level of contamination;
- to developmonitoring guidelines for microplastic contamination in drinking water in Latvia according to the EU recommendations.
