Launching project “Community cooperation for rivers and coasts (CoCoRiCo)”
This autumn together with Baltic Environmental Forum Latvia (lead partner) and Tartu Nature House we are starting a new project projektu “Community cooperation for rivers and coasts (CoCoRiCo)“! Project is being implemented with support from Interreg VI-A Estonia-Latvia Programme 2021-2027. The goal of the project is to create a citizen science community in Latvia and Estonia.
By bringing together school students, teachers, scientists and NGO representatives in Latvia and Estonia, we will focus on water protection, biodiversity conservation and plastic pollution reduction. Throughout the project we will implement joint citizen science activities that will take place in the border river basins and on the coast of the Gulf of Riga.
In the project Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology will share knowledge on plastic pollution, its sources and the use of citizen science methods to survey plastic pollution in coastal areas and rivers, applying “Plastic Pirates” campaign procedures.
The first public event of the project will take place on October 11 in Salacgriva, Latvia. Project partners will meet teachers and students involved in the project and will present citizen science activities that the schools will later carry out while exploring their local waters.
