Astra Labuce appointed as Director of the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology
Astra Labuce, Doctor of Biological Sciences, has taken office as the Director of the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LHEI). Her vision is centered on the purposeful continuation of the institute’s current development, with a particular focus on team collaboration, data management, and strengthening the institute’s role within environmental and science policy processes. The Director emphasizes that LHEI already possesses a strong foundation; therefore, rapid changes are not required, but rather a clear direction and well-organized internal processes.
Astra Labuce envisions LHEI as a powerful scientific institution with the potential to become a major center of excellence in Latvia and the Baltic region. Her priority is to ensure optimal research conditions that allow staff to devote more time to scientific work and the generation of ideas rather than administrative matters. Among her immediate tasks, she highlights the streamlining of data management and promoting the institute’s recognition among students and young people.
As a researcher with extensive experience in aquatic ecosystem studies, Astra Labuce’s professional career has been closely linked to LHEI. She has previously led the field of hydrobiology at the institute, actively participated in international cooperation, and engaged in science communication to explain environmental issues to the public. Her research interests include marine and lake ecosystems, plankton ecology, and data analysis. Furthermore, she holds a Master’s degree in Law, which provides a comprehensive perspective on the development of nature conservation policy.
