This week, the 5th Baltic Earth conference took place in Jurmala, where LIAE together with Leibniz-Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde and Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon hosted scientists from 17 countries and discussed the latest research on the Baltic Sea.

LIAE Director and Senior Researcher Juris Aigars led the session Biogeochemistry of the Baltic Sea – Linking observations and modeling on ​​Monday, while hydrobiologist Andris Andrušaitis led the session on human impacts, interactions and management options on Tuesday.

LIAE Researchers Natālija Suhareva, Astra Labuce and Maija Viška took part in the conference. Natālija Suhareva presented the long-term changes in water color and transparency discovered during the “CE2COAST” project. Astra Labuce outlined the plan of the “Aquainfra” project to continue the study of decrease in water transparency and identifying the processes that contribute to this change. Maija Viška presented the changes of the coast in the Gulf of Riga and on the beach of Daugavgrīva and predictions for the next 20 years.
