Bioeconomy for Blue Growth in the Baltic Sea Region – a platform project to capitalize on the outputs of complementary transnational projects (Blue Platform)

Blue Platform project brought together solutions from the Interreg and Horizon projects on the blue bioeconomy to open up new economic opportunities for implementing innovative and sustainable ways of using marine resources. Blue bioeconomy covers activities based on the sustainable use of renewable aquatic resources, such as aquaculture, mussel and algae farming and marine biotechnology. Such actions are critical to achieving blue growth that is both environmentally and economically sustainable.

Blue Platform raised awareness of existing blue bioeconomy knowledge in Baltic Sea region countries. Platform partners developed a handbook with common standards, policy documents for better alignment of funding and legislation, and created the Blue Platform Roadmap 2020.

The project website showcases more than 25 products and examples of good practice, such as:

  • a new type of fish feed from washed-up seaweed in Sweden;
  • a sunscreen derived from seaweed grown by a Danish company;
  • artificial bone tissue produced from sea mollusk shells in Lithuania.
