The inaudible and unknown underwater noise

How relevant is the problem of underwater noise in Latvian sea waters and do we need measures to solve it?

Stakeholders were invited to discuss these questions at a seminar organized by LHEI on December 6 within the project “Red Noise Baltship”. Representatives from the State Environmental Service, Maritime Administration of Latvia, Freeport of Riga Authority, Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development, Ministry of Agriculture, company “Elektroniskie Sakari” and Liepāja City Municipality Central Administration listened presentations by LHEI research assistant Reinis Kostanda and senior researcher Anda Ikauniece, as well as presentation by Professor Aleksander Klauson (Tallinn University of Technology – TalTech) on the issues of underwater noise in the Baltic Sea. The main conclusion of the discussion that followed was that additional data from Latvian sea areas, noise measurements and correct interpretation of the data are definitely needed . There is as of yet no need for special measures or regulatory actions.

Project “Red Noise Baltic” is financed by the Swedish Institute, the lead partner of the project is “Coalition Clean Baltic”. Within the project, informative and educational activities have been carried out in Latvia. More about the project here.
