As part of the 30th anniversary of LHEI, we participated in the opening plenary session and working group of the DU conference
Daugavpils University 67th International Scientific Conference
On April 10-11 the 67th International Scientific Conference of Daugavpils University was held. At the opening plenary session of the conference, LHEI research assistant Anete Fedorovska gave a presentation “LIFE under water”, introducing the attendees to the activities of the “LIFE REEF” project, which is aimed at studying marine biodiversity in the Baltic Sea. The importance of reef habitats, especially mussel and algal communities, in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems was highlighted. The presentation emphasized the need to effectively protect and manage marine protected areas in the Latvian exclusive economic zone, taking into account the goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy
As part of the LHEI 30th anniversary a separate working group was dedicated to water research. The working group “Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems and Factors Influencing Them”, moderated by LHEI senior researcher Solvita Strāķe, presented the following topics:
- CYANOBACTERIA ECOLOGY IN THE GULF OF RIGA (Ineta Liepiņa-Leimane)
- PELAGIC FOOD WEB OF THE GULF OF RIGA: INSIGHTS FROM ECOLOGICAL NETWORK ANALYSIS (Anda Ikauniece)
- IMPLEMENTING NEW LAKE RESTORATION METHODS IN LATVIA: PREPARING FOR OF THE FIRST ALUMINUM TREATMENT IN THE BALTIC STATES (Barbara Massalska-Duszczyk, project “TRUST ALUM”)
- TACKLING AGRICULTURAL PHOSPHORUS LOADS BY SOIL AMENDMENTS (Valentīna Burdukovska, project “GYPREG”)
- CLIMATE CHANGE-DRIVEN CHANGES IN COASTAL PROCESSES IN THE SOUTHERN AND EASTERN BALTIC SEA AND THEIR POTENTIAL IMPACT ON MARINE HABITATS (Maija Viška, projekts “Cool Blue Baltic”
- INTERDISCIPLINARY METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH TO ASSESSING SEDIMENT QUALITY IN THE GULF OF RIGA (Evita Strode, Latvian Council of Science project “Starpdisciplināru metožu risinājumu pieejas izstrāde sedimentu ekoloģiskās kvalitātes novērtēšanai Rīgas jūras līcī”)
- THE DISTRIBUTION OF NON-INDIGENOUS CRUSTACEAN AND MUSSEL SPECIES IN LATVIAN PORTS (Paula Lilienfelde)
