Field demonstration with gypsum

Field demonstration with gypsum

On Friday, April 25 field demonstration took place in the framework of “GYPREG” project, during which gypsum application on an agricultural land was carried out. The event took place in Zaņa (Kurzeme region) and it was organized by project partners in Latvia – “Farmers’ Parliament” in cooperation with LHEI.

The event was attended by 16 participants – farmland owners and a representative of the Ministry of Agriculture. We presented the project and the potential of gypsum to improve agricultural lands and reduce eutrophication of surrounding watercourses and the Baltic Sea. During the event, gypsum spreading was demonstrated and Professor Ainis Lagzdiņš of Latvia University of Biosciences and Technology (LBTU) presented field sampling methods to determine the effectiveness of gypsum amendments. Participants had the opportunity to visit the adjacent monitoring station and get acquainted with the research conducted by LBTU.

Gypsum amendments on agricultural lands have been successfully implemented in Finland for several decades. Similar demonstrations are also taking place in other project partner countries, where the effects of gypsum application are being tested in local conditions. More about the project GYPREG here.
