Work in European Commission groups

Pursuing establisment of good ecological status of European waters two major legal documents have been adopted:

  • Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000 establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy – Water Framework Directive – WFD
  • Directive 2008/56/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 June 2008 establishing a framework for community action in the field of marine environmental policy – Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD)

To implemet these directives Common Implementation Strategy (CIS) process has been organized. The Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LIAE), as mandated by the “Law of protection and management of marine environment”, is to establish environmental targets for marine ecosystem, assess environmental status of marine waters as well as implement marine monitoring program. Accordingly, LIAE has been delegating Latvian representatives to relewant groups established by European Commission to facilitate CIS process, including:

For implementation of WFD working group on Ecologic Status Contact support WG ECOSTAT. The purpose of WG ECOSTAT. The purpose of WG ECOSTAT (as defined by ECOSTAT work program 2022-2024 is to provide a forum to support the implementation of the WFD by providing for:

  • information exchange between Member States, the Commission and stakeholders on good practice, policy, research/projects and new approaches to the assessment of ecological status and ecological potential as required by the WFD
  • drafting guidance and guidelines to ensure coherent implementation of the WFD
  • feedback on the implementation of the Directive and its reporting with a view to reaching a common understanding on the requirements for its implementation and efficient and effective reporting, and
  • linking with related activities of the CIS at EU level, and with other Commission or international activities for support of the implementation of the Directive.

  • Working group on Knowledge & information exchange – WG DIKE
  • Technical group on marine litter – TG Litter
  • Technical group on underwater noise – TG Noise
  • Technical group on Data – TG Data
