In search of an sustainable floating island substrate

The “BioFloat” project team recently visited Estonian foam glass factory Green Gravels OÜ. The factory manufactures shards of foam glass, which is a sustainable material. It is mainly used in infrastructure and building construction, as well as in garden and landscape design.

During the visit we learned about the production process, properties and various application possibilities of the material. Foam glass has a porous structure, which makes it extremely light, yet durable. The foam glass is made from recycled glass.

Due to its lightweight, long-lasting buoyancy, excellent insulation and drainage properties, it could potentially serve as a suitable microplastic-free layer for floating islands. By the way, it is already used for the construction of green roofs.
