From research to implementation – next steps to improve the state of seas and oceans
LHEI in conference “Mission Ocean” in Denmark
As part of the Danish Presidency of the Council of Europe, a high-level conference “Mission Ocean” was held in Nyborg, Denmark, from September 23rd to 24th, dedicated to the results achieved so far and the next steps in the European Union’s mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters”. Conference speakers from the European Commission, academia, businesses, and school youth representatives highlighted the common trend – solutions found for the preservation, restoration, and protection of oceans, seas, and water ecosystems must be implemented and put into practice.
Much attention was paid to data use and availability, for example, in the EMODnet portal. Conference participants expressed their ideas and visions in discussion groups according to their competence. There was also an opportunity to get acquainted with Danish solutions in various marine ecosystem research and protection issues – remotely operated devices for seabed surveying, Argo buoys, and research vessels were demonstrated. LHEI was represented at the conference by leading researcher Anda Ikauniece.
