LIAA Publication Highlights LHEI’s Baltic Sea Research within the ELWIND Project
The Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) has published an article highlighting the Baltic Sea seabed and ecological research carried out by the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LHEI) within the ELWIND project along the Kurzeme coast.
LHEI researchers are studying the seabed, benthic communities, pollution and sediment transport in the area planned for Latvia’s offshore wind park. The data will help establish the current ecological conditions of the area and provide a scientific basis for assessing how the construction and operation of the future wind park could affect the marine ecosystem.
During fieldwork conducted in June 2026, the LHEI team surveyed 300 locations at depths ranging from approximately 7 to 70 metres, combining underwater video observations with sediment sampling. The research also includes chemical analyses of sediments and modelling of currents and sediment transport. The collected data will be valuable not only for the ELWIND environmental impact assessment, but also for future research and a broader understanding of Latvia’s open Baltic Sea environment.
