Let’s take a look at the concept of the “BioFloat” project floating islands which was developed by the project partner Ltd “ALPS ainavu darbnīca” in close cooperation with project partners and experts. In cooperation with botanists, work continues on the selection of the most suitable plants, and this is no easy task! Invasive plant species that may overwhelm native ones should be avoided. The plants must be able to minimize water pollution specific to each pilot site, and the provide suitable environment for insects, including pollinators. Ducks and other birds might like to feed on certain plants, creating additional puzzle for the experts. The islands must also be visually attractive and serve as an educational nature element in each municipality. Challenging, isn’t it?
The developed concept of floating islands will serve as guidelines for municipalities to develop technical specifications for the needs of each water body and to be able to announce procurement. The guidelines will be universal and everyone can use them. But what exactly will BioFloat floating islands located in Cēsis and Gulbene look like?
