Collection and Recycling of End-of-Life and Lost Fishing Gear (COREEL)

Interreg EstLat project

Collection and Recycling of End-of-Life and Lost Fishing Gear (COREEL)

The aim of the project is improving the environmental status of the Estonia-Latvia border water bodies through the recovery of derelict fishing gear, enabling adequate and up-to-date collection facilities for end-of-life and derelict fishing gear in four locations in the EstLat region and promoting responsible recycling of end-of-life fishing gear among five target groups – fishers, port managers, gear suppliers, municipalities and sectoral agencies in the EstLat region.

The main role of LHEI in the project is to map the bottom of the Gulf of Riga and identify potential lost fishing gear concentrations in cooperation with the project partner in Estonia by conducting surveys with the help of divers, as well as organize fishing gear removal in selected pilot areas for their long-term management.
