Short description

Research of marine protected habitats and determination of the necessary protection status in Latvian Exclusive Economic Zone – LIFE REEF

Within the framework of the project research of the specially protected marine habitats – 1110 Sand shoals in the sea and 1170 Rock shoals in the sea – in an area of approximately 4110 km2 of the Baltic Sea of importance in the European Union, their biological diversity, ecological condition, ecosystem services provided and a plan for their sustainability and management has been developed. The creation of marine protected areas will contribute to the protection of complex habitats by promoting the thriving of both fish and bird populations.

LIAE carries out territory mapping, underwater video observations of protected marine habitats, evaluation of potential marine protected areas and inclusion in the Natura2000 network. Development of quality criteria for the assessment of protected marine habitats. Improving the monitoring methodology for the assessment of qualitative and quantitative changes and impact assessment in marine underwater habitats, fish and bird populations. Evaluation of the effectiveness of protected marine areas in sea waters belonging to Latvia. Exhibition of nature protection plan for all marine protected areas. Assessment of ecosystem services of underwater marine habitats.
