On November 28 a group of teachers from Lithuania visited LHEI and learned about activities in projects LIFE REEF, GYPREG, BioFloat, TRUST ALUM and campaign “Plastic Pirates”

Teachers from Lithuania visiting LHEI

On Thursday, November 28 LHEI a group of teachers from Lithuania was visited LHEI. The teachers are involved in“Millennium Schools Project”, supported by the organization “Eurointegracijos projektai”. Senior Researcher Solvita Strāķe introduced the guests to mapping of underwater habitat in “LIFE REEF” project and non-indegenous species found in the Baltic Sea. Senior Researcher Inta Dimante-Deimantoviča presented the floating island concept in “BioFloat” project, introduced treatment of agricultural lands with gypsum in order to reduce eutrophication in “GYPREG” project, treatment of lake Velnezers using the ALUM method in project “TRUST ALUM”, as well as the citizen science campaign “Plastic pirates – Go, Europe!”. During the visit, we also showed the laboratories of our institute.

The activities were carried in the framework of projects Research of marine protected habitats in EEZ and determination of the necessary conservation status in Latvia (LIFE REEF), Floating islands as biodiversity pit stops and pollution cutouts towards more resilient cities (BioFloat), Building trust in target groups for ALUM treatment – an effective, yet misunderstood method for water quality improvement (TRUST ALUM) and Tackling agricultural phosphorus load by soil amendments (GYPREG).
