Latvia – Lithuania-Taiwan Trilateral Scientific Cooperation Programme project
Microplastics and related persistent organic pollutants in post-glacial Arctic ecosystems and adjacent areas (MP-ARCTIC)
The project goal of the MP-ARCTIC is to investigate microplastic and associated persistent organic pollution in the Arctic region, where the melting of the glaciers leads to formation of lagoons, ponds and lakes in areas which were previously covered by ice. Samples for data acquisition will be obtained from the water surface, sediments, and living organisms of these waterbodies.
LHEI will be responsible for:
- collection of microplastic samples from glacial waterbodies’ water surface and sediments, as well as determining the rate of microplastic accumulation in sediments;
- microplastic samples treatment in the laboratory and samples analysis, data processing;
- project communication activities (participation in conferences, public and educational events, development of research articles, etc.).
