European Maritime Day 2024
On May 30-31, an event dedicated to the European Maritime Day (EMD) took place in Svendborg, Denmark gathering a wide range of specialists and stakeholders working towards marine protection. In parallel to the discussions on current topics, attendees could familiarize themselves with EU-funded projects and companies that offer solutions to research challenges.
At their stand the team of “LIFE REEF” project introduced interested parties to underwater mapping of Latvian marine territories and told about the identified underwater habitats and their ecological importance. Together with project partners Nature Protection Administration LIAE Senior Researcher Solvita Strāķe, researchers Ieva Bārda and Aurelija Armoškaite, Hydrobiologist Andris Andrušaitis and Research Assistant Anete Fedorovska took part in European Maritime Day.
In order to include some outdoor activities, on the day before “EU4Ocean” in collaboration with “BlueMissionBANOS” project and citizen science campaign “Plastic pirates – go, Europe!” organized an excursion to Svendborg beach, where local schoolchildren and other interested parties had the opportunity to learn more about educational activities regarding marine environment and to taste various local products made from seaweed. As part of the excursion, students were introduced to the campaign “Plastic Pirates” where LIAE Research Assistant Valentīna Burdukovska demonstrated collection of samples looking for microplastic pollution in beach sand.
