Introducing politicians to the state of Latvian inland waters and sea areas

On May 10 LIAE participated in a conference dedicated to Latvian water resources organized by the Latvian Parliament and WWF Latvia. Looking back to the event, LIAE Senior Researcher Anda Ikauniece says: “We welcome such an initiative from the Parliament and NGOs, and we also hope that similar conferences will be held on other waters – sea and underground.” LIAE Researcher Inga Retiķe points out “We forget that the protection of Latvian waters is not only an expense, but rather an investment in sustainability, development and safety of Latvia.”

At the end of the conference, the Latvian water sustainability road map was adopted. It includes a comprehensive approach to the development of sustainable water ecosystem natural capital management, including the involvement of stakeholders, improvement of policy documents and legal framework, conservation and restoration of natural diversity and strengthening of pollution control.

The presentation by LIAE Senior Researcher and Head of the Marine Monitoring Department Anda Ikauniece can be found here (in Latvian): “Towards a good status of the marine environment: past, present, future”
