LHEI to Bring Marine Science to the “ma-DARA” Event in Ziemupe
On Saturday, 22 August, the annual “ma-DARA” event will take place for the 15th time on the Baltic Sea coast in Ziemupe, western Latvia. Bringing together music, arts, crafts, environmental knowledge and activities for different generations, this year’s event is dedicated to the theme “Cradle”. As part of the programme “IZZINOŠĀ ma-DARA” (Exploratory ma-DARA), the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LHEI) will invite visitors to discover one of the greatest cradles of life – the sea.
“ma-DARA” is an annual summer gathering held by the sea in Ziemupe, where culture, nature, creativity and knowledge come together. Each year, the event is built around a central theme. Previous editions have explored ideas such as Dew, Sun, Roots, River, Fire and Stars. For its 15th anniversary, the organisers have chosen “Cradle” as the guiding theme, reflecting on what has emerged, grown and developed throughout the history of the event.
The anniversary programme will feature music, theatre, crafts, creative workshops and educational activities, continuing ma-DARA’s tradition of creating a space on the Baltic Sea coast where people, nature, culture and different forms of knowledge can meet. This year’s theme has a particularly strong connection with the work of LHEI. For our researchers, the sea represents a cradle of life – an environment closely connected to the origins and evolution of life on Earth.
Through practical and tangible examples, the LHEI team will also demonstrate how human-generated pollution reaches aquatic environments, how it can affect marine ecosystems, and what we can do to reduce pollution and protect our waters.
The activities will offer both children and adults an opportunity to explore the marine environment up close, meet researchers and ask questions, while discovering how seemingly complex processes in marine ecology are connected to our everyday lives and choices.
The “ma-DARA. Cradle” event will take place on 22 August from 13:00 at Ziemupe beach in Dienvidkurzeme Municipality, Latvia.
