On August 12 the Harbour Festival took place in the Saulkrasti region, inviting visitors to participate in various cultural, sports and educational activities. The LIAE team was present in Zvejniekciems in the “Sea under a magnifying glass” science laboratory and introduced the participants to the microscopic world of the sea.

Visitors of the LIAE tent had the opportunity to see plankton and learn about amphipods living in the Baltic Sea and how they behave. We also answered visitors’ questions such as why water in the sea can be cold in the summer, what jellyfish do in the winter, what is eutrophication, and we also took them through the path of plastic in the marine environment and told about research into microplastic pollution.

The full event program can be found here.

Activities were implemented in the framework of project ESF no. 8.2.2.0/20/I/003, the strategic initiative of the bilateral cooperation fund of the EEA of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway and the grant of Norway “Dynamics and spread of microplastic pollution in the seas and lakes of Latvia and Iceland – starting a new direction of cooperation” and Interreg Baltic Sea Region project “Lakes Connect”.
