“Bānīša svētki” 2023 in Gulbene

On September 2, representatives of the LIAE Microplastics laboratory went to Gulbene to participate in the “Bānīša svētki” (yearly event celebrating the narrow-gauge railway line Gulbene-Alūksne). During the event at the LIAE tent near the railway station visitors had the opportunity to look into a microscope, learn about the equipment for collecting microplastic samples and children could try their hand at various activities.

We visited Gulbene as we working together with Gulbene municipality on Interreg BSR project “Lakes Connect”. We informed visitors of the tent about the first results from the lake sample collection in May. We informed about the types of microplastics found in the lakes in the vicinity of Gulbene and in the project partner countries – Lithuania and Poland. Sample processing in the laboratory continues and at the end of the year we will be able to share the results from the August and October sample collection, too.

Since Latvia just joined the European campaign “Plastic pirates – go, Europe!” we also informed about the opportunity for school students to get involved in this citizen science campaign and investigate plastic pollution in their local rivers and waterways. Students of 8th-12th grade and members of youth interest groups can participate in the campaign. You can follow the news of the campaign on Instagram – @plasticpirateslatvija.
