LIAE takes part in “Shadow day” 2022

Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology joined “Shadow day” 2022 – a day when school students can follow a professional and learn about their work. Thank you to the hard-working and curious “shadows” – Milēna Saļiņa, Jekaterina Lapicka, Anastasija Rima, Elizabete Frišfelde, Linda Boša and Darja Aļeksejeva – who were excited to explore daily work at the ecotoxicology, microplastics, chemistry and benthic laboratories at LIAE. The first underwater habitat surveys for the Life REEF project have been successfully completed

First habitat surveys in the framework of Life REEF project have been successfully completed on 3-7 June. Life REEF LIAE team conducted surveys with the Klaipeda University sailing vessel Brabander of deep shoals in the Latvian EEZ – by filming, diving and direct observation – in the project “Marine Protected Habitats Survey and Determination of Required Conservation Status in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Latvia” or LifeREEF. Webinar “Recommendations for the detection and analysis of microplastic contamination in freshwaters”.

The webinar will present the first Latvian experience on a detailed methodology for the analysis of microplastic contamination in freshwater environmental matrices. You will learn about sample collection, processing, results in freshwaters with different levels of protection. The information will be useful for individuals and environmental experts to understand how protected or vulnerable natural areas are from microplastic pollution, as well as for researchers considering research in this area.
