Last year, for the first time, microplastic pollution was mapped on 25 Latvian beaches, thanks to support from the student sorority “Selga”. This gave us the first insight and data on how widespread this pollution is in the Latvian coastal zone.

Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology is participating in the Sea Festival on Liepāja beach by presenting a diverse program on marine fauna research. Visitors were given the opportunity to learn about the fate of plastics in the environment, get acquainted with and try out methods of collecting, processing, and analysing microplastic samples and to engage in discussions on issues related to plastic pollution.
