LIAE has started implementing multi-sectoral project activities

With the support of the State Regional Development Agency and Latvian Environmental Protection Fund (LVAF), LIAE has started the implementation of the project “Improvement of monitoring of microplastic pollution in rivers and coastal sand” (Nr. 1-08/37/2022) approved within the framework of the multisectoral project activity – Cooperation projects for environmental policy development and implementation.

Microplastic pollution in marine and associated habitats is a hot issue these days, however monitoring still lacks appropriate practices and guidelines. This project will improve monitoring methods for microplastic pollution in rivers (as a pollution vector to the sea) and coastal beach sand, considering the experience of other countries and first developments in Latvia. The results will allow future assessment of pollution trends and consideration of the introduction of this type of regular monitoring.

The first field work activities have been carried out within the project by collecting microplastic samples in coastal sand and seawater (Liepāja centre, Akmeņrags, Jūrkalne, Ventspils, Roja, Engure, Daugavgrīva, Lilaste, Vecāķi, Tūja, Mērsrags) and in rivers (Daugava, Gauja, Salaca, Lielupe, Venta).

The project will end in October 2023.
