Robotics students from Ilūkste visit LHEI
Students and teachers from Robotics club of Ilūkste Raiņa Secondary School visited LHEI on December 5. We introduced students to our institute’s research topics and showed our laboratories. Senior researcher Iveta Jurgensone and research assistant Laura Batare showed phytoplankton and zooplankton under a microscope. Research assistants Monta Kalniņa, Paula Lilienfelde and Māra Kostanda presented bottom-dwelling organisms in water bodies.
Senior researcher Solvita Strāķe talked to students about non-indigenous species in the Baltic Sea, which have traveled to us from distant seas. Senior researcher Rita Poikāne explained how to determine the age of fish and research assistant Juris Tunēns demonstrated methods of water sample analysis in the chemistry laboratory. In the microplastic laboratory research assistant Anda Prokopoviča explained how we collect microplastic samples and how they are analyzed. For the older students, senior researcher Anda Ikauniece had prepared a lecture on environmental issues in ocean and sea ecosystems and involved our visitors in exercises.
We appreciate the active participation and curiosity!
Activities were done in the framework of projects “LIFE REEF” and “EMODnet Data Ingestion III”.
