Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology is a partner in the new Interreg Baltic Sea Region project “Lakes connect” – Building networking hub for units interested in lakes protection in Baltic Sea tourist regions.

The project will foster cooperation between professionals in different fields at local and international level. The project aims to improve the quality of lake ecology in tourism regions. The target groups of the project are scientific institutions, non-governmental organisations, state and local authorities from three Baltic Sea region countries: Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.

The project aims to create a networking centre of interest for knowledge-based solutions to reduce the impact of tourism on inland water quality.

Building trust between target groups and partners involved to raise awareness on lake pollution is the main objective of the project. Cooperation between research institutions and local and other authorities remains insufficient. Trust-based cooperation and networking will allow better identification of current environmental problems and the search for knowledge-based solutions.
