Cooperation with Iceland for microplastic pollution research

LIAE Senior Researcher Inta Dimante-Deimantoviča and Research Assistants Marta Barone un Sanda Svipsta spent last week in Iceland to implement activities of two projects. Kick-off meeting for the ImproveMicro project was organized together with project partners. The aim of the project is to improve research performance and strengthen international cooperation in the field of microplastics research. During the meeting discussions were conducted on the current challenges in the field of microplastics research and possible solutions and related sources of funding were discussed, the competences and infrastructure of participating partners were presented, and networking activities were carried out. Project partners were shown the microplastic sampling equipment and process in one of Iceland’s lakes.

In addition, as part of the project on researching microplastic pollution in Latvian and Icelandic seas and lakes, microplastic samples were collected in the surface water layer of three Icelandic lakes and two fjords in order to obtain information about the extent of microplastic pollution and to evaluate the quality of sample collection method. This project supports the priority areas and directions of action in the Arctic region set by Latvia as an observer state of the Arctic Council.

These activities were undertaken in the framework of Baltic Research Program project no. EEZ/BPP/LZP/2023/3 “Strategic initiative to improve research performance and strengthen cooperation in microplastic pollution field (ImproveMicro)” un EEA un Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2014-2021 Special Fund for Bilateral Relations initiative no. FM2022/37 “Mikroplastmasas piesārņojuma dinamika un izplatība Latvijas un Islandes jūru un ezeru ūdeņos – jauna sadarbības virziena uzsākšana”.
